Half Empty with Nothing But Air

November 13, 2008 By: Sekou Murphy Category: Business

This is an article in Venture Beat.  It discusses Adeo Ressi’s views on the current venture capital industry and that all signs are pointing to a need for change in the venture capital business model.

Check out slide #10.  There are a LOT of me too businesses.  I can’t help but think about Mixx.com.  It was a straight bite off of DIGG.  I couldn’t (still can’t) tell what the better mousetrap is with Mixx, but they might have something up their sleeves in the mid to long term.

Interesting...a buddy who's principle at a VC told me that only a handful of VCs actually make money.

So it's not surprising that the same VCs are funded over and over again. What's surprising is that VCs with horrible track records get funded. Reminds me of a friend who works on Capitol Hill (funny, I have more than one friend) wondered why the same Democrat strategists who have losing track records can go from campaign to campaign....it's insane.

Don't disagree at all. Sometimes there's safety going after the same kinds of businesses. If the venture fails, the VCs can say to investors, there wasn't that much risk...Company X did it too.

True, but VCs aren't doing to well, so they have to make sure they make some dough.

It' s interesting...I thought VCs prided themselves on investing in new technologies. Seems like they're interested in safe technologies that might make only incremental improvements.

I understand it though. But it's the same problem that created the lack of creativity in music. Labels began ONLY to back safe kinds of music...that is, the stuff that sales.

Maybe they could use a version of Obama for the VC industry :P
